Apart from being the 26th-largest media market in the United States, can we hear the explanation again for why San Diego has major professional sports franchises?
San Diego’s disinterested fans contributed to the hometown Chargers’ 45-38 loss to the Packers on Sunday when they were drowned out by Packers fans at Qualcomm Stadium. An ESPN story reported there were at least 25,000 Packers fans at the game in sunny San Diego, and possibly as many as 35,000 — which would have made the Chargers-to-Packers fan breakdown an even 50-50 at the 70,000-seat stadium.
The rowdy Packers fans forced the Chargers to go to a silent snap count in the fourth quarter during the potential game-tying drive.
“[Sunday] did feel like a home game,” Green Bay tight end Jermichael Finley told ESPN. “It was just Lambeau in the West.”
Alright, San Diego admittedly is beautiful any time of year, particularly in early November for a Wisconsinite looking to flee the cold. There’s so many other pleasant ways for the natives to spend a Sunday afternoon than watching a football game. We understand.
San Diegans don’t need to live and die with their teams like we do in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., or Green Bay, Wisc. But can’t they at least care enough to outnumber opposing fans at a home game?
