The Red Sox are interested in free-agent outfielder Carlos Beltran, according to Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman. A baseball executive estimated to Heyman that Beltran could get a two-year deal.
Beltran, 34, was traded from the Mets to the Giants in late July last season in exchange for a minor league pitcher and cash. He hit .323 in 44 games for the Giants, hitting seven homers, four triples and nine doubles for an OPS of .920.
After playing just 145 total games in 2009 and '10 combined, Beltran was healthy enough to play 142 games this season, hitting .300 with 22 home runs and 84 RBIs. His .910 OPS ranked fifth among National League outfielders, trailing only Ryan Braun, Matt Kemp, Lance Berkman and Matt Holliday.
Beltran's last experience as a free agent was a bit different, as he signed a six-year deal with the Mets worth $119 million, or which came out to just under $20 million per season.
Last July, Beltran said he only wanted to be traded to an NL team and that he wasn't willing to switch to a designated hitter's role.
