Report: Joe Paterno's Departure From Penn State Being Planned by SchoolThe public outcry for longtime Penn State football coach Joe Paterno will ultimately lead to the end of his 46-year tenure, according to a report by The New York Times.

Paterno will leave his position as head coach, "perhaps within days or weeks," report Mark Viera and Pete Thamel of the Times. Paterno, 84, has been Penn State's head coach since 1966, but the sex scandal surrounding former longtime assistant Jerry Sandusky will apparently bring an end to that tenure.

"The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paterno's exit, but it is clear that [Paterno] … will not survive to coach another season," the report said.

The report indicates that the exact details of his exit have not yet been decided upon.

Gary Schultz, the school's senior vice president for finance and business, and Tim Curley, the school's athletic director, have already left their positions after they were charged in the grand jury investigation into Sandusky and the cover-up at the school that followed.
