The Baltimore Orioles general manager's position might not be open much longer. The O's are close to officially naming former Red Sox GM Dan Duquette as their next general manager, according to ESPN.com.
Duquette interviewed for the position in Baltimore on Friday and reportedly traveled back to Baltimore on Saturday to finalized a contract.
The Baltimore Sun reports that an industry source indicated that no offer has been extended to Duquette yet, but that that could change soon.
The Orioles reportedly offered the job to Toronto Blue Jays assistant general manager Tony LaCava, but he turned it down. They have also interviewed Dodgers assistant GM DeJon Watson and Phillies assistant GM Scott Proefrock.
Duquette was the Red Sox general manager from 1994-2002 and served as the GM of the Montreal Expos from 1991-1994.
He turned the Expos into the best team in the NL during the strike-shortened 1994 season and many of his transactions — including the acquisitions of Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez, Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe — helped lead the Red Sox to their 2004 World Series title.
