As Nike gears up to take over NFL uniforms in 2012, several college teams have had an opportunity to give football fans a glance into the future of professional uniforms.

The next college team in line for a test run of Nike Pro Combat uniforms is none other than Andrew Luck‘s Stanford Cardinal team. Borrowing from a line from Stanford’s fight song (“Forever and forever Stanford red”), the uniforms are all red. They are, however, a darker shade of red than Stanford’s traditional Cardinal Red.

The helmets feature the same font for Stanford’s “S” logo, but are black matte instead of the traditional white. The gloves form an “S” when the wearer puts his hands together.

Stanford joins a group now nine teams large that has sported Nike’s new threads. The other colleges include Oregon, Georgia, Boise State, Michigan State, LSU and Ohio State.

What’s more, the Dec. 10 Army-Navy showdown will have both teams donning Nike Pro Combat threads.

Although classicists will find the uniforms an unsightly step into the future, Luck himself said the uniforms are “a good deal,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

“I’m fine wearing whatever,” he added with a laugh. “If they put us in purple… I shouldn’t say that because of [the University of Washington Huskies].”
