As each day approaches, a new name swirls into the Red Sox closer discussion. While Ben Cherington has made progress on that front — dealing for Mark Melancon — the first-year general manager isn’t tipping his hand on the final candidates.

But the offseason is the time for gambles. With many candidates in play to replace Jonathan Papelbon, we decided to handicap the race to be Boston’s closer in 2012.
