Spearing will be forced to watch Saturday’s game against Queens Park Rangers from the stands at Anfield. He will also miss away trips to Aston Villa and Wigan.
The combative 23-year-old midfielder was sent off in the 72nd minute of the 1-0 loss after making a hard tackle on a 50-50 ball. He caught Fulham’s Mousa Dembele with the follow-through and upended the Belgian attacker with a two-footed tackle. Referee Kevin Friend sent Spearing off, swinging the game from Liverpool’s favor to Fulham’s.
In his postgame press conference, Reds’ manager Kenny Dalglish said the club would review the incident before deciding if it should appeal the ban.
“I think you need to ask them (referees) what their interpretation is,” he said. “It’s frustrating because no one ever tells us what the interpretation is.
“Jay had no other thought in his mind but to win the ball, and he did win the ball. I’m not a referee so all you can say is sometimes they are given, sometimes they are not, but as long as they are consistent then it’s not a problem. We’ll have a look at it again and see if it’s worth appealing.”
Spearing was the early choice of both Dalglish and supporter to replace injured star Lucas in the holding role in Liverpool’s midfield.
