The memory of last season's ending is starting to fade, and Red Sox fans appear to be more thrilled than ever for the start of spring training.
The Red Sox set a spring training record for weekend ticket sales, the team announced. The upcoming season will mark the opening of JetBlue Park at Fenway South, the Red Sox' new 106-acre spring training home in Lee County, Fla.
The team sold 34,705 spring training tickets between 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17 and midnight on Sunday, Dec. 18, surpassing the previous high mark of 34,315 tickets sold for spring training in 2007.
"We are grateful for the extraordinary support fans have shown this weekend, many of whom were lining up days in advance for an opportunity to purchase tickets to the opening season of JetBlue Park at Fenway South," Red Sox executive vice president of business affairs Jonathan Gilula said in a statement. "We are excited for the 2012 season at our new spring training complex, and once again thank the citizens of Lee County and their elected officials for their vision and support in making this exceptional new facility a reality."
Fans still have an opportunity to purchase tickets for spring training, although availability is limited. Tickets can be purchased in person at the City of Palms Park ticket office in Fort Myers, Fla., Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., online at redsox.com, or by phone at 877-REDSOX9.
