The Red Sox and the Washington Nationals appeared to be the final teams in the running to acquire Oakland left-hander Gio Gonzalez. In the end, it appears that Washington simply had more to offer.

ESPN's Keith Law is reporting that Gonzalez is going to be shipped to D.C. in exchange for a package of four prospects. Brad Peacock, Derek Norris, A.J. Cole and Tom Milone will be the prospects heading to Oakland in exchange for the 26-year-old left-hander.

Gonzalez gives the Nats quite a trio at the top of the rotation. He'll join Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmerman to make up a starting rotation that just got a whole lot better.

The Red Sox were rumored to be in on Gonzalez, as there were talks of a "monster" deal that would bring both Gonzalez and closer Andrew Bailey to Boston.
