Report: Potential Suitors Could Sign Fernando Torres From Chelsea in January for £20 Million

Fernando Torres could be headed for the exit door at Chelsea FC in January. The Daily Mail reports the former Liverpool striker could leave the Blues for £20 million ($30.8 million), nearly one year after forcing his way out of Anfield for £50 million ($80 million).

“Chelsea have been patient with the 27-year-old, but the feelers are already out in Europe to find Torres a top club to take him in January,” the report reads.

The goal-shy striker has struggled since his Chelsea move made him the most expensive player in British soccer history. He has even fallen behind the up-and-coming Daniel Sturridge and veteran Didier Drogba in manager Andre Villas-Boas‘ pecking order in recent weeks.

He last started a game on Nov. 29 when Chelsea lost to Liverpool in the Carling Cup. His last start before that game was on Nov. 1 in the UEFA Champions League.

Torres was an unused substitute in Monday’s 2-1 win over Manchester City. He was photographed sitting motionless on the bench as his teammates celebrated Frank Lampard’s game-winning goal.

The World Cup and European Championship winner has found it difficult to settle in London. He scored three goals in his first 25 games in Chelsea colors, but maintained the public backing of the club and supporters.

A number of clubs would be interested in Torres at that reported price. If he moves on for £20 million he would certainly go down as one of the most expensive transfer flops in history.
