Roberto Luongo ‘Sucks,’ According to Netminder’s Own T-Shirt

Roberto Luongo has been through a lot in the past couple of years. After becoming a Canadian hero for winning gold in the 2010 Olympics, things have gone a bit south.

He posted less-than-stellar numbers in the 2010 playoffs as the third-seeded Canucks couldn’t get out of the second round, and a year later, with a chance to win a Stanley Cup, Luongo fell flat on his face and needlessly threw a verbal jab at counterpart Tim Thomas in the process. Luongo gave up 20 goals in the seven-game series, including eight in a single game, and his comments about pumping tires will forever be remembered in Boston and beyond.

But all that was history, as they say, on Tuesday night, until Luongo allowed a third-period goal and later allowed all three Blue Jackets skaters to score during the shootout. With the win, the Blue Jackets moved up in the standings to second-worst in the NHL, and the entire Canucks roster took blame for the loss.

It was Luongo, however, who had to pay the price with an unfortunately placed microphone in his postgame meeting with the media.

Was this mere coincidence, or diabolical comedic genius on the part of one reporter?

Quote of the day

“Timing is everything. Chemistry is something that you don’t just throw in the frying pan and mix it up with another something, then throw it on top of something, then fry it up and put it in a tortilla and put in a microwave, heat it up and give it to you and expect it to taste good. You know? For those of you who can cook, y’all know what I’m talking about. … If y’all can’t cook, this doesn’t concern you.”
–Kevin Garnett, explaining the intricacies of building chemistry in a rushed environment
