Tyler Seguin did not play on Tuesday night after missing a team meeting and breakfast in Winnipeg. Instead, he watched from the press box as the Bruins lost to the Jets 2-1, snapping a four-game winning streak and a 15-game point streak that had started way back on Oct. 29.
"He didn't wake up," Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli told reporters. "Honest mistake, but we have team rules and we have to abide by them. He has to abide by them.
"He's had a couple of incidents before over the course of his career," Chiarelli continued. "I don't see it as a problem. I see it as a young player who sometimes forgets to set his alarm. So that's why he's a scratch."
Whatever the reason, there was plenty of discussion revolving around Seguin's benching and whether or not the team overreacted. Some may argue that the team did the right thing and sent the right message to their young star about what is expected of a franchise player. Others will observe that without their leading scorer on the ice, the Bruins only managed a single goal for the first time since mid-November.
While the Bruins have a long way to go this season and are still in a comfortable position in their division, every game counts. What's done is done, but there is still plenty of opportunity to debate whether or not Seguin should have been benched.
