Brad Marchand finally learned his fate on Monday night for his hit on Vancouver’s Sami Salo during the Bruins’ Stanley Cup Final rematch with the Canucks on Saturday afternoon.
The NHL announced that the Bruins forward has been suspended five games for this hit on Salo during the second period of Vancouver’s 4-3 win at TD Garden.
NHL vice president of player safety Brendan Shanahan announced the ban on Monday in a video on NHL.com. Shanahan called the hit “dangerously low,” explaining that it was a violation of the league’s clipping rule. Marchand received a five-minute penalty and a game misconduct for the hit.
Shanahan noted that the league didn’t see the hit as “defensive or instictive,” instead calling it a “predatory, low hit.”
