Things got physical early and often in Saturday's Stanley Cup Final rematch between the Bruins and Canucks. And now, Brad Marchand will reportedly have a phone hearing with league disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan on Monday to discuss his actions.
The hearing is regarding a hit that Marchand delivered on Canucks defenseman Sami Salo late in the second period, which result in a clipping penalty, a five-minute major and a game misconduct, according to NHL.com.
Marchand went low on Salo as the Vancouver defenseman closed in for a hit. Salo went flying up over Marchand's back, resulting in a concussion for the veteran blueliner, according to Vancouver general manager Mike Gillis.
Gillis wasn't too pleased with the hit after the game, calling it "a dirty play by a dirty player."
Marchand said that he thought he hit Salo above the knees, around the hip point.
"I had no intention of hurting Salo on the play," the Bruins winger said. "He's a very big body coming in on me –- I'm not the biggest guy -– and in a situation like that, I have no idea what he's going to do and I'm just trying to protect myself."
The Canucks ended up scoring two goals on the ensuing power play and won the game 4-3.
