BOSTON –– Like most baseball aficionados, Curtis Granderson monitored the Prince Fielder bonanza in the offseason.
When the former Brewers first baseman inked a nine-year deal last week with the Tigers, Granderson — who spent six seasons in Detroit — lauded Fielder and his former club for the shocking marriage.
"The best thing was everyone was like 'Wow'," Granderson said, speaking at Monday's Hot Stove Cool Music Baseball Roundtable. "One, that he got the money that everybody thought he should be in that range. Two, the fact he went to a team that nobody thought he was possibly going to go to. Three, Detroit filled up a void right away that they had with Victor Martinez going down.
"I think it's going to be a great addition for them. It's definitely going to be interesting to see where some guys move around, but it's always good to have those types of issues to worry about than still needing to grab players."
Fielder’s move to the American League will only threaten the Yankees and Red Sox's bid for supremacy. With Albert Pujols fortifying the Angels, Granderson acknowledged the rising parity in the AL.
"As long as everybody stays healthy, it's going to be a very interesting battle," Granderson said. "There's definitely not going to be too many days that you can take off. "You go from east to west coast or east to central and you say 'OK, this may be a little easier than it was before. But it’s definitely not going to be that way right now."
