“Money is not an issue,” Ayre said. “If we need somebody and there’s a player … the manager will get supported whatever he needs. But that’s not the same as saying we will just go spend money because we have got it or just because we can.”
Liverpool has been linked with a number of players in recent months, but has not added any players to the squad since last summer. Manager Kenny Dalglish has repeatedly said he’s happy with his current squad, suggesting he will not buy in order to fill a short-term need. Ayre echoed Dalglish’s sentiments.
“It is about the long-term plan of where they want the squad and where they want the team to be, that’s not about any particular transfer window it’s about continuing to improve, he said. If an opportunity presents itself I am sure we will look at it, but right now it’s about keeping going and improving and getting the best out of what we have got.”
The transfer window closes at midnight on Jan. 31, and there could be a flurry of last-minute activity. Liverpool may or may not be a participant, but its long-term strategy will be the determining factor.
