The Red Sox avoided salary arbitration with outfielder Ryan Sweeney on Friday, and they've now done so with catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
Saltalamacchia and the Sox have agreed to terms on a one-year, non-guaranteed contract, the team announced Sunday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the Boston Herald's Scott Lauber reports that Saltalamacchia will make $2.5 million this season.
This will mark Saltalamacchia's second full season in Boston, as the catcher was acquired from the Texas Rangers at the trade deadline in 2010. He hit .235 with 16 home runs and 56 RBIs in 358 at-bats over 103 games last season.
The 26-year-old ranked third among American League backstops with 28 runners caught attempting to steal in 2011, the most by a Boston catcher since Jason Varitek threw out 29 runners in 2002.
