To make room for outfielder Cody Ross on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox have designated pitcher Scott Atchison for assignment.
The team officially announced the move Thursday, just days after inking Ross to one-year, $3 million passed his physical. Boston will mark Ross’ sixth stop after stints with the Giants, Marlins, Reds, Dodgers and Tigers.
Atchison, 35, made 17 appearances for the Red Sox in 2011, going 1-0 and posting a 3.26 ERA to along with his first career save. The right-hander also converted five saves in Triple-A Pawtucket en route to tallying a 6-2 record with a 2.64 ERA in 36 appearances.
