Edwin Jackson has been seeking a long-term contract throughout this offseason, but he's recently been more open to accepting a one-year pact. Therefore, the Red Sox may still have a chance to land the right-hander.
The Sox have offered Jackson a one-year deal in the $5-6 million range, according to The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo.
Cafardo reports that Boston remains in the hunt for Jackson, although the 28-year-old has received at least two multi-year offers, one of which is believed to be from the Baltimore Orioles.
There's been a lot of buzz lately that Jackson — a Scott Boras client — could opt for a one-year deal with a contender to improve his value and then hit the open market once again next offseason. If he's able to put together a solid campaign, he could set himself up to earn more money down the line, just as third baseman Adrian Beltre did last offseason after a solid 2010 season with the Red Sox.
Jackson has expressed a desire to pitch for a contending team, and the Red Sox certainly fit the bill. It could all depend on how much money he's willing to sacrifice in order to make that happen.
Jackson finished last season at 12-9 with a 3.79 ERA overall, and he's 60-60 with a 4.46 ERA over the course of nine big league seasons. The righty twirled 199 2/3 innings in 2011, and eclipsed the 200-inning mark in both 2009 and 2010, making him a valuable asset to whichever team he joins.
