Rhys Williams is four years into his adventure in English soccer, and the Australian midfielder has his sights set on the top flight. The Daily Mirror reports Williams has been scouted by a number of Premier League clubs, including Liverpool.
“It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League and right now it’s looking good,” Williams said. “For me it’s not about money or anything, it’s about fulfilling a dream. I’d love to go up with Boro but at the end of the day it’s my burning desire to play in the Premier League.”
The 23-year-old has starred in a holding midfield role for Championship club Middlesbrough. Williams has committed to staying with the promotion chasers through the end of the season, but will assess his options during the summer.
Newcastle, Bolton, West Brom will jockey with Liverpool for the player’s signature, according to the report. His agent recently met with “representatives from Anfield”, the Mirror says.
He would find it difficult to break into the Liverpool team if he moves to Anfield in January. Jay Spearing, Charlie Adam, Steve Gerrard and Jordan Henderson have a firm grip on the center midfield roles.
A summer move could see him compete for playing time throughout the preseason, and is more likely. It is believed he would fetch a transfer fee worth around £2 million ($3.1 million).
