That success — which usually comes with brothers skating next to each other on th same team — has come in both Hockey East and at the professional level.
Paul Kariya and Steve Kariya were both standouts at the University of Maine. Steve spent four years with the Black Bears and in those four years, he tallied 50 or more points in three different seasons. His college success eventually found him in the NHL for a brief career. Paul, on the other hand, spent just two seasons with UMaine before jumping to the NHL. After 124 points in 51 collegiate games, the went to the NHL where he scored 989 points in 989 games. He also added seven All-Star appearances and a pair of Lady Byng awards to his impressive resume.
The Gionta brothers also found college success that eventually led to professional success. Brian Gionta was a valuable member of the Boston College for four years. Gionta is still going strong in the NHL as a member of the Canadiens. Meanwhile, Stephen Gionta was another solid Eagle before being joining the Devils organization after school.
Speaking of BC brother standouts, the best is yet to come for the Hayes brothers. Jimmy Hayes a solid piece of some successful Eagles teams in recent years and was a second-round pick in 2008. He made his NHL debut with the Chicago Blackhawks this season. His brother, Kevin Hayes, is in the same organization, as he was a first-round pick of the Hawks in 2010. He's in the middle of his second season at Chestnut Hill, but the two may have a bright future together in Chicago.
Those aren't the only successful pairs of brothers to have played their college hockey in Hockey East. If you go back a few years, you'll find David and Joe Sacco. The duo combined for 410 career points for Boston University before moving on to the NHL.
The Eaves brothers and Ferraro brothers are also some of the most successful family pairings in Hockey East history.
