Rocking Ranger blue in front of thousands of fans at Madison Square Garden is quite the honor but being named captain of the original six franchise is reserved for the best of the best. Since 1991, there have only been five different captains, including the team’s current captain and New York native Ryan Callahan, who was given the “C” prior to the 2011-12 season.
Messier, who trails only Bill Cook as the longest-tenured captain in Rangers history, served as the on-ice boss for 10 seasons. Cook, the team’s first ever captain, donned the “C” from the franchise’s first year in 1926 through his final NHL contest in 1937. Messier retired in September of 2004 — the year of the NHL lockout — and the team skated without a captain during the following year.
