Tragedy occurred when a 12-year-old boy died after a lacrosse accident last week.

Tyler Kopp passed away Tuesday after being struck in the chest with a lacrosse ball on Feb. 2, reports FoxSports.com. Kopp was a 7th grader from Brighton, NY and was playing at the Total Sports Experience in Gates, NY when the accident occurred.

Kopp was participating in a routine play when he was hit in the chest and his heart stopped. The young boy was wearing all of the proper equipment at the time of the incident.

CPR was administered to Kopp by an off-duty firefighter until ambulances arrived. Kopp was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY where he passed away.

“Tyler was a bright, athletic, engaging student who was always surrounded by friends,” district superintendent Kevin McGowan said in a letter to parents of the school. “Mirroring his spirit in the classroom and on the playing field, Tyler courageously fought hard to recover from this tragic accident. The Brighton family is mourning this tragic and sudden loss of a wonderful young man and member of our school community. Our deepest sympathy and thoughts are with the Kopp family.”
