The "Linsanity" surrounding Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin has taken over fans and athletes alike. So when Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez dropped by SportsCenter on Wednesday, even he couldn't escape it.
Gonzalez discussed a number of pressing topics regarding Boston's upcoming season, but he was eventually asked about Lin, who has exploded onto the NBA scene.
"I think it's great. I think it's great for the game of basketball. You know, Jeremy Lin's a Harvard guy, how they like to say it," Gonzalez said while trying to put a Boston accent on Lin's alma mater. "Boston is really embracing him, which I really got to experience that last week. It was fun to be around that. It's a weird feeling seeing Boston embrace a guy who plays for a New York team, so it is fun to be around that."
Lin, a Harvard graduate who is the NBA's first American-born player of Taiwanese or Chinese descent, has scored more points in his first five starts (136) than any other player since the NBA-ABA merger. It's even more amazing considering he went undrafted out of college, and was waived by the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets before reaching stardom in New York.
Lin's emergence is something to be intrigued by, but it's always interesting to see other star athletes — like Gonzalez — get caught up in the moment.
