Cristiano Ronaldo has scored an astonishing 29 goals in 24 league games this season. But none top the one he scored Sunday. The Portuguese star scored a long range, no-look, back-heel goal to give Real Madrid a 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano.
The 27-year-old is locked in a dead-heat with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi for the “Pichichi” — the award for top scorer in Spain’s first division. Ronaldo leads with 29, but Messi only trails by one goal.
The “Pichichi” race comes in the context of the two clubs’ title race. Barcelona is La Liga’s three-time defending champion, while Madrid is the most successful club in the history of Spanish (and European) soccer. Madrid holds a 10-point lead with 14 games remaining, and Barcelona’s hopes are quickly slipping away.
That could be one reason why Ronaldo felt comfortable praising his own work.
“A back-heel is always different,” CNN reports he told AFP. “It was a great goal but I’m not sure if it was the best of my career — I have to see it again on TV.”
