Danleigh Borman will not man the left fullback position for the New England Revoution in 2012. After rebuffing contract offers from the Revs, he signed a three-year deal with SuperSport United in his native South Africa, Kickoff.com reports.
"I'm very happy to join the club," Borman told SuperSport's website. "SuperSport is a very good team and has been successful in the PSL. I'm glad I have joined and I'm going to try my best to keep the high standard of the club."
In early December, New England selected Borman in the MLS Re-Entry Process from Toronto FC. It offered him a contract, which he declined. The 27-year-old earned $42,000 last season, and the Revs' offer was likely in that region.
Borman is a former University of Rhode Island standout, who had four years' MLS experience. It was expected that he would be New England's starting left back in 2012, but the two sides could not agree on a deal.
There is no free agency in MLS, and Borman's contract with the league had expired. By selecting him in the Re-Entry process, New England had exclusive (MLS) rights to negotiate with him. But Borman decided to test his worth on the worldwide market.
He is a former South Africa U-20 international, and a product of the youth system of South African Premier Soccer League club Santos. He impressed Supersport during a recent trial, and earned himself a contract.
The Revolution will continue to look for a viable option at left back. Rookie Tyler Polak is a possibility, as is the versatile Chris Tierney. The Revs could also look at players outside of the club.
