Ever Banegas is the latest to make headlines by finding an entirely new and idiotic way to injure himself after he ran his own leg over while getting gas for his car. Banegas fractured his ankle and leg and will be out six months.
As a way to help him out, here's a list of other injury prone athletes to help him feel less alone in this tough time.
Santiago Canizares
The Spanish keeper missed the 2002 South Korea/Japan World Cup after a shaving accident when a bottle of after-shave fell and broke on his foot, causing tendon damage.
Bill Gramatica
The Gramatica brother during his stint in Arizona got a little too excited celebrating a first quarter field goal in 2001 and tore his ACL, effectively ending his season.
Faustino Asprilla
The Colombian forward, known for his volatile temper, was out for a month in 1993 after injuring his foot while throwing a tantrum. When a bus cut him off on the road, he got out of his car and when he tried to kick through the door he cut his foot.
David Batty
Batty, who missed a penalty kick in the 1998 World Cup quarterfinals against Argentina, tore his Achilles' tendon playing with his son in the backyard.
Plaxico Burress
While with the Giants, the wide receiver was sidelined (in jail) for more than two seasons after shooting himself in the thigh.
Joel Zumaya and Alessandro Nesta
There’s a reason video game nerds aren’t professional athletes. The baseball player and soccer player, respectively, had to miss time after injuring tendons in their hands from playing "Guitar Hero."
Martin Palermo
An entire subcategory should exist for athletes that injure themselves celebrating, but Palermo’s has to be one of the worst. After scoring for Villarreal in a Copa del Rey match, Palermo Lambeau Leaped into the stands, causing the structure to collapse on his leg. Palermo was out six months.
Paulo Diogo
Diogo jumped on the perimeter fence of the stadium and severed his finger on the way back down when his wedding band got caught in the fence. Doctors were unable to reattach the finger.
Sammy Sosa
In 2004, Sammy Sosa was placed on the DL with back spasms after sneezing too strongly before a game against the Padres.
