Jose Canseco is one step closer to returning to the majors.
OK, so he might still have a ways to go, but the 47-year-old slugger is at least channeling his inner Kenny Powers.
Canseco announced via Twitter that he has signed with the Quintana Roo Tigers of the Mexican League. They are the league's defending champions, but the high expectations surrounding them isn't stopping them from giving the controversial former AL MVP a shot.
"I am thrilled to be back in affiliated professional baseball," Canseco told Larry Brown Sports. "Playing and managing for the independent league Yuma Scorpions last year really rekindled my love for the game and facing the veteran players in that league made me realize that I can still hit at the major league level. I am grateful that Cancun has given me this opportunity and I hope to help them to a championship season and demonstrate that I can help a big league team."
Canseco said that he'll be leaving on a red-eye on Sunday night to begin spring training on Monday.
The signing comes on the heels of Canseco expressing his desire to get back to the majors via Twitter. He previously begged A's general manager Billy Beane for a chance, and even expressed a desire to return to Boston, where he played two seasons in the mid 90s.
Canseco, an admitted former steoird user, feels that he can still help a big league team win. However, he might be hard pressed to find an organization that shares those same beliefs.
