BOSTON –– It's been an offseason like none other for Larry Lucchino.
The aftermath of the crushing collapse in September, the decision to replace former general manager Theo Epstein with Ben Cherington and the two-month long search for a manager have contributed to the Red Sox team president's hectic agenda.
But with spring training on the horizon, Lucchino praised Cherington’s decision-making following a promotional news conference at Logan Airport.
"I think Ben hit the ground running," Lucchino said. "It was a tumultuous offseason and I think the first major decision that we had to make and Ben had to make was the field manager decision. I think you've seen how good that decision appears to be because [manager] Bobby [Valentine] has also hit the ground running.
"It was a great first decision by Ben and I think it's going to pay dividends a thousand ways going forward."
Aside from hiring Valentine, the highlight of Cherington's 3 1/2 month tenure has arguably been trading for All-Star closer Andrew Bailey. Other notable moves include dealing for reliever Mark Melancon and inking outfielder — and 2010 NLCS MVP — Cody Ross.
As Lucchino prepares for his trek to Fort Myers on Feb. 23, he expressed excitement about the Red Sox's upcoming prospects.
"We're optimistic, but I mean this is February, so everybody in baseball is optimistic," Lucchino said. "That's what February is for. But I think there's good reason for [optimism]. We got a veteran team, some deep talent and new baseball leadership."
