Mark Melancon is preparing for his return to the AL East by swimming around in what ocean dwellers may view as a giant chum bucket.

The Red Sox pitcher, who was acquired this offseason from Houston, recently spent time swimming with great white sharks in Southern New Zealand. Melancon began his career with the Yankees in 2009, so the 26-year-old knows a few things about pressure situations — but swimming with sharks takes the meaning to a whole new level.

This offseason activity begs the question: If Mike Greenwell was known as “The Gator” for trapping an alligator one spring training, did Melancon just earn himself a new nickname?
