Finally, the deal is done. Sort of.
The Red Sox and Cubs finally came to terms on compensation for Theo Epstein on Tuesday, and the price for the former Boston GM is a pitcher with 9 2/3 big league innings.
The Red Sox announced that right-hander Chris Carpeneter will be coming to Boston as the centerpiece part in the compensation. The two teams will also exchange players to be named later.
The 26-year-old Carpenter made his debut in 2011, appearing in 10 games (all relief appearances) for the Cubs. He allowed three runs on 12 hits over those 9 2/3 innings.
The 6-foot-4 Carpenter has some good stuff, but as is the case with most young pitchers, he's struggled with commands at times. Carpenter walked 34 batters in 52 1/3 innings in the minors last season.
He was a third-round pick in 2008 and entered the spring as the Cubs' No. 12 prospect.
