FORT MYERS, Fla. –– The Red Sox are adding two more games to the spring training slate.

Manager Bobby Valentine confirmed Monday the Red Sox will now play the Twins –– also based in Fort Myers –– on March 1 and the Pirates on March 7 in B-games at JetBlue Park.

The team likely made the additions to ensure that veteran pitchers such as Aaron Cook, Justin Germano, Carlos Silva and Vicente Padilla would have enough innings to compete for spots on the team.

Out of desperation, the Red Sox are also vying to stretch out the length of its games against Northeastern and Boston College. If not, Valentine posed the possibility of having Red Sox pitchers toe the rubber for the collegiate clubs.

"It will be official for some of those guys who are pitching in it," Valentine said of the competition. "I guarantee you that — as official as it gets for some of them."
