The Red Sox announced Monday that Scott Atchison has cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket.
The reliever was initially designated for assignment on Jan. 26 to make room for outfielder Cody Ross on the 40-man roster. He also received an invitation to the Red Sox’s major league spring training camp.
Atchison, 35, made 17 appearances for the Red Sox in 2011, going 1-0 and posting a 3.26 ERA to go along with his first career save. The right-hander also converted five saves in Triple-A Pawtucket en route to tallying a 6-2 record with a 2.64 ERA in 36 appearances.
