The Red Sox went overseas to lock down their next prospect, signing highly touted Australian pitcher Daniel McGrath.

McGrath's professional team, the Melbourne Aces, announced the move Wednesday. Having signed the deal, the 17-year-old will travel to Fort Myers on April 1 to tour the facilities and get accustomed to the environment.

McGrath won't use the facilities until 2013. Before officially joining the club, the 6-foot-3 pitcher intends to finish high school by the end of this year.

Jon Deeble, the Red Sox' scouting director for the Pacific region, represented the organization as McGrath inked the deal.

"The big thing is that in Boston we don't sign players when they aren't ready. Dan will take his time to get to where he needs to get, and we'll ensure that he has full use of all of our support staff on that journey," Deeble said.
