The Rajon Rondo trade rumors are still swirling.
After an offseason in which Rondo was linked to a number of potential deals, most notably in connection with Chris Paul, a new rumor has surfaced involving the young point guard heading to the Celtics' West Coast rival.
There's a chance that the Celtics and Lakers could do a Rondo-for-Pau Gasol swap, according to HoopsWorld's Eric Pincus.
The rumor started when Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak seemingly made an indirect reference to Rondo during an interview with Mike Trudell of Lakers.com.
"If there were a way for us to get a 25-year-old, All-Star, ball-handling guard we'd love to do it," the Lakers GM said. "But that's not likely in February. So you look at other alternatives, and see if it's better than what you have. That's all."
Pincus notes that Kupchak is typically a "literal" speaker — citing an instance prior to the Lakers drafting then 17-year-old Andrew Bynum. He writes, "Applying that logic to the Trudell quote, there is exactly one 25-year-old, All-Star, ball-handling guard in the league."
That would be Rondo.
According to Pincus' report, sources have told HoopsWorld that the C's do have interest in swapping their All-Star point guard for Gasol, a four-time All-Star in his own right. The Celtics reportedly do not intend to build their roster around Rondo.
This report is highly speculative, and who knows if such a blockbuster will ever come to fruition, but it's interesting to consider the Celtics and Lakers doing business, nonetheless.
