The Bruins have been playing with a full head of steam and full heads of hair. That changed Wednesday when players had their heads shaved at Shawn Thornton's "Cuts for a Cause" charity event.

The lucky folks who got to take the shavers to the players' heads were picked through an online auction. The highest bidder for each player went onstage Wednesday at Royale in Boston, took a buzzer and shaved away.

The most notable skull of the afternoon belonged to Adam McQuaid, whose mullet last season helped propel the Bruins to the Stanley Cup. The mullet has taken a different form this year, but some Bruins think it could have the same result.

"Yeah, it's a little bit different. But I like it, I like the look," Brad Marchand said. "McQuaid can rock it."

The Bruins have been playing with passion lately and are 5-1 in their last six games. With just six games left in the season, the new hairdos — or lack thereof — may be just what the B’s need heading into the playoffs.

The more than $58,000 raised in the event goes to the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center.
