FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox are pulling back the reins on Carl Crawford.
After the Red Sox outfielder experienced pain in his surgically repaired left wrist last week, Dr. Donald Sheridan – the same surgeon who performed the procedure — suggested Crawford shut down activities.
"It was determined that he should curtail his swinging and throwing for five to seven days," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "There was a little inflammation that was detected, so he's going to do just that."
Since reporting to the Red Sox complex, Crawford always targeted Opening Day for his return to the diamond. But after the recent setback, Valentine acknowledged that Crawford's goal became much tougher.
"Carl, he loves to do a lot of stuff and it's probably not in his best interest to overdo it," Valentine said. "Overdo it, to him is just regular. … The Opening Day thing is probably not realistic. Might be, but probably not."
