With his squad down 2-1 late in the game, Beckham was preparing to take a corner kick when a fan tossed a beer can onto the field, landing near him. Toronto fans were already covering the area surrounding Beckham with streamers, but the beer can was the last straw.
Beckham, clearly annoyed, picked up the beer can and gestured to the officials before tossing it aside. The distractions did not work, as Beckham delivered the corner kick, which lead to Landon Donovan scoring the tying goal seconds later.
Beckham spoke after the game about the incident with reporters, stating that while most of the fans made the event worthwhile, some rotten eggs spoiled the show.
“Tonight was a great atmosphere. The majority were here to enjoy the spectacle. It’s a shame some people spoiled it. It’s disappointing kids see it,” said Beckham.
