Whenever Apple announces new versions of their products, it’s almost assured that the world will be listening. Wednesday was no different, as Apple announced the new iPad3 and a new version of Apple TV.

The new version of the Apple TV now features 1080p high definition, which means that sports fans will be able to watch what they want at the highest level.

Major League Baseball, the NBA and the NHL all have their own Apple TV services that allow fans to watch games live and check out highlights on demand whenever they want.

So what else could possibly come to Apple TV? ESPN has its WatchESPN app available for the iPad, iPods and iPhone but has not landed on the Apple TV. Perhaps the newest version will allow fans to finally tap into the Worldwide Leader. If ESPN were to join Apple TV, it would be a huge boost for fans.

The NFL is the only one of the four major American sports to not have an app on the Apple TV, and it doesn’t look like that will change any time soon. With Direct TV owning exclusive rights to NFL Sunday Ticket, it might be difficult for Apple to get their hands on arguably the most popular sport in the United States.

However, with NFL RedZone going through Verizon and Apple’s close relationship with the telecommunications company, the possibility can’t be completely ruled out.

It was rumored in January that Apple was in the running to bid on Premier League TV rights. The ability to stream soccer would be a great help for fans all over the world, and would help give Apple TV international appeal.

The Apple machine isn’t going to slow down anytime soon, and the Apple TV is another cog that the company wants to get going. While sports fans have some options with the product, there are still many holes that Apple can fill in order to make it a true must have.
