Help could be on the way for the Celtics.

After failing to make a move prior to the NBA trade deadline and then learning on Monday that Jermaine O’Neal will be sidelined for the remainder of the season, the C’s could use some depth, particularly in the frontcourt. It looks like the Celtics could be turning to free agency to add that depth.

Head coach Doc Rivers said Monday that the C’s were “close” with a couple of free agents. And according to CSNNE.com’s A. Sherrod Blakely, Rivers expects the C’s to have another big man on board no later than Friday, which marks the waiver deadline for playoff eligibility.

The holdup on signing any of those free agents, though, is reportedly that there are a couple of players that the C’s have interest in that are buyout candidates who could become available soon.

“You want to wait for that,” Rivers told CSNNE.com. “You don’t want to sign a guy and then another guy [you’re interested in] buys out. It’s a game of chicken, but it’s hurting us. We literally need a body. We just need anybody.”
