Turns out there's more to being a football kicker than just, you know, kicking.
Former LSU soccer goalie and homecoming queen Mo Isom was trying out to be a kickoff specialist for the school's football team, but didn't make the cut after two weeks of tryouts.
According to coach Les Miles, it's not that she didn't have the leg for it — it's just that he wasn't sure she'd be up for making tackles.
"She's a great person but there's some things she can't do and she knows it," Miles said. "We go to kicking off into the corner, we count on our kicker making some tackles and it's just not something I'm comfortable she's ready to do. It's one of those spots you really can't put a person that cannot tackle."
He added that he had told Isom before tryouts that he already felt there were four (male) kickers currently on the team that he expected to be ahead of her on the roster.
However, the Mad Hatter is still going to give her a chance to make the squad as a placekicker.
"She's going to go back and concentrate on extra points and field goals. She did not want to take that she couldn't make the team," he added. "She said, 'Do I get another opportunity if I get a lot better.' I said 'Sure.'"
