The story about Kansas State's Jamar Samuels being forced to sit out of the Wildcats' third-round NCAA tournament game continues to get more bizarre.
Samuels was suspended by K-State athletic director John Currie for the team's March 17 matchup with No. 1-seeded Syracuse after he reportedly took $200 from his former AAU coach and family friend, Curtis Malone.
Apparently, though, the receipt for the wire transfer was found when someone went looking through garbage, reports The Wichita Eagle.
"It was found, basically, it was found just on the floor, in the trash at the grocery store and it was brought to the compliance office," Currie said on Tuesday. "I promise you, I wish it would have stayed in the trash."
Currie said he and the school conducted an investigation, after which he made the decision to suspend Samuels. The Orange went on to beat the Wildcats 75-59.
"There was a violation of NCAA rules in that circumstance," Currie said. "Under the rules a student-athlete, if they have committed a violation … they are ineligible from the time it occurred and or the time the institution becomes aware of it.
"It would have made my weekend a lot better if a receipt hadn't shown up in our compliance office. We do not have people out combing the trash cans in Manhattan searching for trouble. Once it came into our possession, for us to do nothing would have risked the integrity of the institution."
Samuels, a 6-foot-7 senior, was K-State's second-leading scorer at 10 points per game and averaged a team-best 6.6 rebounds.
