On Opening Day last year, Bryan Stow attended a Giants game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Almost a full year later, Stow's attorneys are working to get the money Stow needs to pay his enormous medical bills.
Stow will require medical care for the remainder of his life and his attorneys say the sum could reach the range of $50 million, according to the Los Angeles Times. A bankruptcy claim against the Dodgers had been filed, and the Dodgers have attempted to resolve the situation. However, Stow's attorneys have rejected that proposal.
In an attempt to get the get the case removed from the Bankruptcy Court, the Dodgers said they would defer to the Superior Court if three conditions were met. With the Dodgers currently handling significant financial struggles, the team is looking to avoid fighting this legal battle while they are still under the umbrella of bankruptcy.
Stow's attorney's said they would be willing to wait until the team exited bankruptcy, but refused the condition disabling Stow from seeking to recover damages from the defendants, rather than just the insurance carriers. Stow's attorneys claimed this last condition would "severely limit Stow's right to recover punitive … damages."
Even after a year, the terrible story of Stow's violent beating and recovery is unresolved. Hopefully, Stow is able to receive the money he needs in a way that is fair for both parties.
