One thing is perfectly clear: Adam Eaton was supposed to receive six checks worth more than $20,000 each.
However, the checks ended up in the hands of the wrong Adam Eaton, according to the Arizona Republic.
Diamondbacks minor league outfielder Adam Eaton reportedly received the checks in an envelope by someone from the Major League Baseball Players Association. However, having never played past the Double-A level, the 23-year-old was a bit thrown off, as he's not even part of the MLBPA.
Well, as it turns out, the checks were supposed to be delivered to a different Adam Eaton; a 34-year-old former major league pitcher who last toed the rubber in 2009.
"[Teammate] Cody [Ransom]'s like, 'Those aren't yours,'" the younger Eaton, a 2010 19th-round draft pick, recalled. "I'm like, 'What do you mean they aren't mine? They're in my name.' He goes, 'That's the other Adam Eaton. Do you live there?' It had the address on the front. 'No.' I go, 'Do I have to give them back?' He's like, 'Yeah. You have to give them back.' I thought it over and I'm like, 'Yeah, I've got to give them back.'"
The younger Eaton even described himself as being "on top of the world for a good 30 seconds."
Oh well. Maybe some day.
