On Saturday, Paulo Guerrero proved that some players should stick to what they do best. Guerrero’s attempt at winning the ball off goalkeeper Sven Ulreich has earned him an eight-game ban, according to FIFA.com.
Guerrero’s team, German club Hamburg, was trailing VfB Stuttgart 3-0 in the 54th minute of Saturday’s Bundesliga game. He decided to inspire his teammates and chase a lost cause toward the corner flag. The 28-year-old striker launched a flying tackle for the ball, but somehow caught Ulreich’s knees instead.
The German Football Association reviewed the incident and handed the Peruvian an eight-game ban for serious violent conduct. Hamburg has announced they will appeal the length of the suspension. If it is upheld, Guerrero will effectively miss the rest of Hamburg’s season.
“I am very disappointed by the verdict,” Hamburg’s sporting director Frank Arnesen said. “I do not excuse the foul but, compared to other fouls, I was not expecting such a heavy punishment.”
It’s possible that the Peruvian striker was not aiming to maim his opponenent. But maybe you should watch the video below, and judge for yourself.
