Mike Gonzalez never pitched in a Red Sox uniform despite getting shipped to Boston in a 2003 trade. But he could end up getting his chance if a recent report is accurate.
The Red Sox are monitoring the market for Gonzalez, according to The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo, who notes the less than desirable lefty reliever options available to the club.
Gonzalez, who is currently a free agent, pitched in 56 games split between Baltimore and Texas in 2011, compiling a 2-2 record and a 4.39 ERA. The 33-year-old veteran has also pitched at the big league level with Pittsburgh and Atlanta, saving 24 games for the Pirates in 2006 and appearing in 80 games for the Braves in 2009.
The Pirates actually traded Gonzalez to the Red Sox along with reliever Scott Sauerbeck for Brandon Lyon and Anastacio Martinez on July 22, 2003. His stint in the Sox system was short-lived, though, as Gonzalez was traded back to Pittsburgh 10 days later after just two appearances with Pawtucket.
The Indians and White Sox have reportedly also shown interest in the free-agent lefty in recent weeks.
