This is not to say that Wozniacki does not want to get back to the top of the WTA tour. She proved that Tuesday night in a masterful performance against Serena Williams to advance to the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open. It's her first career win against Williams, and one that she won convincingly.
Wozniacki was able to embrace her strong defensive game to tire out Williams, returning everything the American could throw at her. Yes, it was just a quarter-final. Yes, it is not Serena Williams at her peak. Yes, it’s not even a Grand Slam event, but it was a grand performance.
With Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova (Wozniacki’s opponent in the semifinals) hugging the attention of the tour with their consistent play and stellar looks, Wozniacki found herself for the first time in years not being the premier player on Tour.
Affable, beautiful, half of a power couple -– Rory McIlroy, the current No.1 golfer in the world -– Wozniacki makes the perfect protagonist in the WTA despite her play not being quite as flashy as some other players.
On Tuesday, she showed she can bring it off the court as well as on the court. And with the top three players in the tour being beautiful, talented, and charismatic the WTA is having one of its best seasons in years.
Wozniacki wants to be number one again, she’ll fight for that title against Sharapova and Azarenka not only in this tour but in the rest of the year.
It was a long time coming, but finally some real drama is forming at the top of the WTA, and Wozniacki is ready to once again be part of the conversation except for once without the pressure of being the only consistent player on tour.
Misery likes company, but it seems talent likes it just as much.
