Nicknaming athletes has been a time-honored tradition. Some nicknames are so iconic that you don't even need to use the athlete's real name during discussion. If anyone mentions "The Splendid Splinter" while talking about baseball, fans will know that they are talking about Ted Williams.
That's how powerful a nickname can be.
But they can also be really weird.
Soccer is one sport that has its fair share of bizarre monikers. Any sport that has a player nicknamed "The Bear Strangler" or "The Atomic Flea" certainly has its characters. While not possessing the same gravitas as Wayne Gretzky's nickname, they are certainly amusing and very creative, nonetheless.
