BOSTON — At first, Dustin Pedroia was just a bystander in the saga.

Once he learned about Red Sox skipper Bobby Valentine's critical comments about Kevin Youkilis, the second baseman was none too pleased. He voiced his thoughts on the matter loud and clear.

"I don't really understand what Bobby's trying to do, but that's really not the way we go about our stuff here," Pedroia said. "I'm sure he'll figure that out soon."

Pedroia defended Youkilis, saying the third baseman "he's played his ass off for us for a long time." When asked if Valentine was secretly attempting to motivate Youkilis, the 28-year-old wasn’t buying the theory.

"Maybe in Japan or something, but over here in the U.S. we've got a three-game winning streak and we want to feel good and keep it rolling," Pedroia said. "We feel we have a good team and we've just got to get each other's backs and play together. If you don't do that, I don't care what sport you're playing, you're not going to win."

Through eight games this season, Youkilis is batting .200 with three RBIs and has tallied three walks.
