BOSTON — Jacoby Ellsbury left Friday's game against the Rays with a right shoulder injury.

As Dustin Pedroia grounded out into a double play, the center fielder slid into second base and forcefully collided with Tampa Bay shortstop Reid Brignac.

Upon the impact, Ellsbury clutched his right shoulder and the Red Sox trainers sprinted out to examine him. The team later confirmed that Ellsbury had indeed suffered a right shoulder injury and would undergo further evaluation.

Before exiting in the bottom of the fourth, Ellsbury had gone 2-for-3 with one RBI. In his absence, Cody Ross shifted to center field and Ryan Sweeney entered the game to patrol right field.

Ellsbury finished second in the American League MVP voting to Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander last season.
